You don’t give to get

December 2, 2011

hopefully by now you will have seen that we are not encouraged anywhere in the bible to give to God, so that he will give to us. But what is staggering is that Jesus DOES tell us that we are to invest and expect a return!

He tells the story of a crazy merchant who sells everything, house, business, car… everything to buy a pearl

He tells the story of a man who having discovered treasure in a field, sells up – everything – to buy the field and own the treasure

He tells us that people put their hearts where their treasure is. Not put their treasure where their heart is. The fact is that we put our time and energy into the things we own, or invest in. (This is why partners care much more for the company than employees)

This is why I worry about my house and car…

We can invest in the Kingdom of God, and this is treasure we can take with us when we die.

Paul tells Timothy ” Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.”

The trouble with putting our resources into investments or possessions in this life is that “values may go down as well as up”. It is uncertain, it will devalue, there will eventually come a time when everything we have worked so hard for will be worthless – unless we invest in the Kingdom. in Loving the poor, in Sharing the good news, in being Generous…

Principle 5 of New Testament giving – the key to it all:

We are to live as simply as we can, sharing with others and thus investing in the Kingdom of God.

I’d love to hear your views, so please feel free to leave your comments.
